"A very amusing, albeit difficult, game has recently been placed on the market for the benefit of those who might be tired of the joys of ping-pong, and seek fresh amusements that can be played at home in the long winter evenings." So reads this 1902 Evening Post article featuring a wonderful sketch of well-dressed Edwardians - of both sexes - enjoying a game of Table Football, or, as it was branded then, "Wibbly-Wob", intended as a potential rival to Ping-Pong. And all this some 40-plus years before Subbuteo came along!
Wibbly-Wob remained popular into the 1930s. The above photo shows Leicester City team playing it before a cup tie in 1925.
