Goal Post

table football 1902"A very amusing, albeit difficult, game has recently been placed on the market for the benefit of those who might be tired of the joys of ping-pong, and seek fresh amusements that can be played at home in the long winter evenings." So reads this 1902 Evening Post article featuring a wonderful sketch of well-dressed Edwardians - of both sexes - enjoying a game of Table Football, or, as it was branded then, "Wibbly-Wob", intended as a potential rival to Ping-Pong. And all this some 40-plus years before Subbuteo came along!

Wibbly-Wob remained popular into the 1930s. The above photo shows Leicester City team playing it before a cup tie in 1925.
