An expansion to cover Edwardian football alongside Victorian football allows us to include this great 1905-06 team shot of the Chelsea eleven standing in the goal at Stamford Bridge's North End (now the Matthew Harding Stand). The club was formed in March 1905, and 1905-06 was Chelsea's first season in competitive football.
In the centre of the photo is the unmistakable figure of goalkeeper and captain Willie Foulke, then 26 years old, 6'3" tall, and 22st 3lb in weight. Remembered as "Fatty Foulke", he was then better known as "Little Willie". Also shown, fourth from the right, is Chelsea player/manager John JT Robertson, a Scottish international signed from Rangers to lead the new club. Fourth from the left is Jimmy Windridge, signed from Small Heath, who scored 18 goals in that first season.
And just as interesting is the scene behind the players, where a small crowd of flat-capped fans gather on the old standing terrace.
